The Open Allegany Pledge

OPEN
ALLEGANY

We the undersigned, all of whom live, work, study or own property in Allegany County, Maryland, or are natives of the county, affirm our belief in open government and open community, and pledge to hold all decision makers to these inseparable principles.

To us, open government means decisions affecting the public are at every level open to public examination and discussion. We oppose back-room deals, cronyism, and the routine secrecy that doles out public information only on a “need-to-know” basis. Whenever governments and their agents act, the public needs to know.

To us, open community means outsiders and minorities are urged and welcomed to live here, work here, go to school here, invest here, and become leaders here. We oppose bigotry, hate, and the routine suspicion of those who “aren’t like us.” To thrive in the 21st century, our communities, economies, cultures and governments need diverse and enthusiastic help from everyone.

We pledge to work together toward an open Allegany.
